How OutdoorChimneys Reviews Products

Callum Voss, Founder & Editor-in-Chief
How we weigh every fireplace and flue system we recommend — and what our 28 years in hearth products taught us about what actually works outside.

What this site does

OutdoorChimneys is an editorial guide for anyone planning an outdoor fire feature — from a clay chimenea for a small patio to a prefab fireplace with a proper flue. I've spent three decades on the production side of hearth manufacturing, including ten years focused on outdoor-rated systems. That background means I read every spec sheet, liner compatibility chart, and owner forum post so you get the straight story on what holds up in your climate and what doesn't. This is an editorial operation, not a sales platform — we name prices, trade-offs, and specific brands because that's the information I wish someone had handed me when I started.

How we evaluate

  • Materials and weather resistance: cast iron vs. clay vs. steel for rain, frost, and heat
  • Flue draft and smoke control: whether the design clears smoke away from guests
  • Assembly and installation complexity: what a DIYer can handle vs. when to call a pro
  • Price relative to longevity: where spending more buys real durability vs. styling alone
